The historic centre of La Rochelle

The best way to discover La Rochelle is on foot or by bike, getting lost in the back streets and strolling around its historic centre, stopping off at markets showcasing local products and animated little boutiques.

With its half-timbered houses, its archways, secret passages and "guardians of time" gargoyles, the town is a real outdoor history book. This former leading port city has kept traces of its past commercial and defensive activities, with its ramparts and its medieval towers at the Vieux-Port, locking in the town from the sea.

From the top of these sites, you have a breathtaking vista over the town and the Ocean and can just imagine all the adventures they lived through together.
